I heard news recently that the personal debt in America is at an all time high and that bankruptcy statistics for 1999 went through the roof. It seems we have no concept of "doing without." Where and now this spending spiral will end is a question I will leave to the financial analysts. I would like to deal with a much more important, but non-monetary debt which is soon to be up for collection.
Whether you realize it or not, since you were born, you have been adding to a debt toward God. You are proving that God is right for calling all men SINNERS (Romans 3:23). Every time you break one of God's laws (Exodus 20:1-17 LYING - no matter how small "Thou shalt not lie"; STEALING - no matter how valuable "Thou shalt not steal"; MURDER - "Whosoever hateth his brother is a murderer..." 1 John 3:15; ADULTERY - "...Whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart." Matthew 5:28; IDOLATRY - "Thou shalt have no other gods before me" (i.e. boats, houses, jobs, relationships - just to name a few), your debt grows!
The Bible word for the satisfaction of a debt is Propitiation. Do you have the propitiation for your sin debt?
"Herein is love, not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins." 1 John 4:10.
"And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world." 1 John 2:2.
"...Christ Jesus: Whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past..." Romans 3:24-25
Jesus Christ is the only one who could possibly pay (propitiate) your debt in full. God will accept no other - not even your best efforts. Jesus said in Matthew 7:21-23, "Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity." Why is it that these religious acting people will be cast into the Lake of Fire? They never agreed with God about their sin. They will argue with God on the grounds of their own accomplishments. "For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God." Romans 10:3.
Will you agree with God about your sin, and call out to Him to forgive your sin debt? All of eternity depends on your answer.
