Some Things We Should Greatly Fear

This article is a message I recently preached at Faith.

Please read 2 Timothy 1:1-18 and take note of verse 7, "For God hath not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind." The fear spoken of here is equivalent to timidity. Jesus said in Matthew 8:26, "Why are ye fearful? O ye of little faith." Read also Revelation 21:8.

Fear has a good side and a bad side. For example, fear can bring a person to faith or as Jude 23 states, "Others save with fear pulling them out of the fire..." Read also Hebrews 2:9-15 and Hebrews 10:26-31. Novice verse 31: "It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God."

Hell is a place and a destination to be feared! once a person has believed upon the Lord Jesus Christ the fear of hell is removed as we can see in 1 John 4:18, "There is no fear in love; but perfect love casteth out fear: because fear hath torment. He that feareth is not made perfect in love." Romans 8:15 says, "For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba Father."

For the believer, fear of death is removed. "Yea though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil:" Psalm 23:4. Death has lost its sting. "O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory?" 1 Cor. 15:55. So, if we are saved by the grace of God, we don't have to fear death!

  1. We should fear developing a cold heart. (Rev. 2:4)
  2. We should fear developing a critical attitude. (Eph. 4:31)
  3. We should fear developing a carnal lifestyle. (Rom. 8:5-8)
  4. We should fear developing a covetous life. (1 Tim. 6:6-10)
  5. We should fear becoming a spiritual castaway. (1 Cor. 9:19-27)

Castaway in those verses means 'disapproved'. It does not mean one can lose salvation. Many a good Christian has allowed the first four things to happen and have become castaways, something every believer should fear greatly. Saved friend, If you once lived for the Lord and yet now your life is empty and you have lost your joy and testimony, Why not claim 1 John 1:9 and get back in the battle for the Lord?
