Joining the Church of Corinth (Part 2)

The Church of Corinth was so shallow that most of what we know from Scriptures about tongues, communion, lawsuits, long hair on men, spiritual gifts, marriage, divorce and remarriage and separation of the Saints comes from their failure in these areas. No Church of the New Testament needed more rebuke and more correction. It was a popular, feel good, comfortable Church. A place where everyone felt welcomed and there was no condemning of sin from the pulpit. There was no power in the preaching and no purity in the pew, just like many Churches of our time. There was actually a slogan used to depict the low moral atmosphere of Corinth: To "live like a Corinthian" meant to live a base life of sin! Here are some subjects of 1 Corinthians that are not subject to public opinion:

  1. Salvation is not a matter of public opinion.
  2. Preaching is not a matter of public opinion.
  3. Living in harmony with others is not a matter of public opinion.
  4. Living a faithful life is not a matter of public opinion.
  5. Maintaining a clean vessel (life) is not a matter of public opinion.
  6. Living a separated life is not a matter of public opinion.
  7. Having a Christ-honoring marriage is not a matter of public opinion.
  8. Living a disciplined life is not a matter of public opinion.
  9. Living in God's will is not a matter of public opinion.
  10. Being a fruit-bearing believer is not a matter of public opinion.
  11. Living with a good conscience is not a matter of public opinion.
  12. Being a follower of Christ is not a matter of public opinion.
  13. Knowing your Spiritual gifts is not a matter of public opinion.
  14. Living a charitable life is not a matter of public opinion.
  15. Dealing with doctrinal issues is not a matter of public opinion.
  16. The second coming of Christ is not a matter of public opinion.

The Church of Corinth was popular because it was guided by public opinion. Whatever the people wanted, that they got. THEY COULD HAVE RELIGION WITHOUT SPIRITUALITY, AND SIN WITHOUT SORROW AND WORLDLINESS WITHOUT WORRY.

One of my members sent me a lengthy report from Fox News published today, Tuesday, February 3rd. It concerns the "Megachurch" movement in America. I plan to quote it in part 3, but listen to this statement from the article relating to Joel Osteen, Pastor of America's largest Church. "The seriousness of traditional Churches scared many parishioners away, Osteen said, but the warm hug delivered by megachurches like his is bringing them back." Back to what? I will show next week.
