Survive and Thrive Like the Church At Thessalonica
I am writing this article Tuesday morning after reading the Daily News front page article : "Angry Americans Spreading Their Rage." The article mentions "Road rage, desk rage, school rage, air rage, surfer rage, and tennis rage..." Listen to a few comments in the article. "A decade ago, they seemed like isolated incidents...We are an enraged society...I think psychologists would call infantile rage, helpless rage...every person walking on the planet is susceptible to this phenomenon...There’s a powder keg waiting to happen... The causes are myriad...365 day pace...increased pressure...impatience...over- burdened transportation systems; and the changing nature of such traditional rule-setting structures as home and Church...We have unrealistic expectations... Irrational behavior has become the norm in every aspect of our society... Irrational behavior by kids at school, by sports stars, by mom and dad, by people at work, has become the norm. Basically, we’ve created a breeding ground for violence...We’re no longer in a community, negotiating mode...Adults are in a survival mode. We’re doing it out of fear and we’re doing it out of what’s in it for me, me, me. Everything is focused on the ‘I’ and the ‘me’ and it’s surrounded by the pressure cooker." End of quote.
The above quoted article is a prime example of how our nation slipped away from the principles of the Bible that keep the spirit in check. For example, I noted that the writer finds "causes" and goes so far as to recognize "the changing nature of such traditional rule-setting structures as home and Church." Wow! Could it be that we narrow-minded, intolerant, Bible-thumping, fundamentalists were right all along? We have been saying all along that we can’t take away the principles upon which this nation was founded, and not reap the consequence. The voices of our Godless society have drowned out and regulated away the guiding principles that would have kept this in check. Prov. 29:15,17,22 states, "The rod and reproof give wisdom; but a child left to himself bringeth his mother to shame...Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul...An angry man stirreth up strife, and a furious man aboundeth in transgression."
Road rage and every other kind of so-called rage is a result of undisciplined, unBiblical upbringing. It cannot be blamed on society or circumstances. Psalm 2:1 and Acts 4:25 (which is a quote of Ps.2:1) state, "Why do the heathen rage, and the people imagine a vain thing?" Proverbs 29:9 states, "If a wise man contendeth with a foolish man, whether he rage or laugh, there is no rest." Prov. 14:16 states, "A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil:but the fool rageth, and is confident." Rage of any kind is nothing more than rebellion against God and His authority. To be continued.
I quoted Prov. 14:16 in Part 1 which states, "A wise man feareth, and departeth from evil: but the fool rageth, and is confident."
Rage of any kind is the result of an undisciplined life. It is rebellion against conscience. It is also rooted in self-centeredness. For a Born-Again believer, it is a sure mark of Spiritual immaturity and a definite fruit of not walking in the Spirit, or as we say, not being filled with the Holy Spirit. Look at Gal.5:19-23 and see the difference between the works of the flesh and the fruit of the Spirit. Notice the works of the flesh include, "hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife" etc. Notice listed under the fruit of the Spirit are , "peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness...meekness, temperance:" Believers have no excuse when it comes to rage. Eph. 4:30-32 is written to believers and concerns our behavior. Listen to these inspired words: "And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption . Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from your with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you." Unbelievers also have no excuse, however, the world looks for and even finds "causes" for this rage. The causes of rage are resident in the person. It is a matter of choice. We choose our actions as well as our reactions. This is why we are personally responsible to God for our actions and reactions, no matter what we use as an excuse. The world’s answer to rage and it’s results is physical restraint and sometimes medication, mind altering drugs. Parents practice the restraint method by confining their children to their rooms rather than getting to the root of the problem. That does little to change the heart and only deals with symptoms. Eccl. 8:11 states, "Because sentence against an evil work is not executed speedily, therefore the heart of the sons of men is fully set in them to do evil." The Plan of God is to regenerate. 2 Cor. 5:17 is the answer: "Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold all things are become new." Please read James 3:1-18 and take particular note of the Biblical description of an unbridled tongue: Verse 6, "And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity:..." Verse 8 , "...it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison..." and finally,v18 states, "And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace." Paul in Rom.3:13-18 deals with the symptoms of an unregenerate: "Their throat is an open sepulchre; with their tongues they have used deceit; the poison of asps is under their lips: Whose mouth is full of cursing and bitterness."
