What does the Bible say about the Super Bowl? NOTHING, OF COURSE, but it does say something about those things which in themselves are harmless, yet cause many Christians to stumble. Nowhere in the Bible do you find the Church accommodating the world. I have noticed for years now how the Christian has been faced with the decision to be faithful to the things of God or the things of the world. For example, many clean programs which would not be offensive to Christians are aired on Sundays and Wednesdays. If you have noticed, the President's speeches to the nation are almost always on Wednesday night, when most churches have their mid-week Prayer Meetings. Strange, wouldn't you say? Maybe even calculated? The media has learned how to manipulate the population to their benefit. When given a choice to serve and worship God or the things of the world, the Christian can testify to the intensity of their love and devotion to God by making the Godly choice. 1 John 3:15-17 says, "Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, THE LOVE OF THE FATHER IS NOT IN HIM. For all that is in the world, THE LUST OF THE FLESH, AND THE LUST OF THE EYES, AND THE PRIDE OF LIFE, IS NOT OF THE FATHER, BUT IS OF THE WORLD. AND THE WORLD PASSETH AWAY, AND THE LUST THEREOF; BUT HE THAT DOETH THE WILL OF GOD ABIDETH FOREVER."
PLEASE LISTEN! FOOTBALL IS NOT SINFUL! HOWEVER, WHEN THERE IS A CONFLICT BETWEEN FOOTBALL AND SERVING GOD; FOR THE CHRISTIAN, GOD ALWAYS COMES FIRST!
TO INCORPORATE SUPER BOWL SUNDAY IN THE CHURCH SERVICES IS TO CHEAPEN THE THINGS OF GOD AND FOSTER A COMPROMISING ATTITUDE TOWARDS THE THINGS WHICH ARE IN DIRECT OPPOSITION TO THE THINGS OF GOD.
Daniel 6:5 says, "Then said these men, We shall not find any occasion against this Daniel, except we find it against him concerning the law of his God."
They put a conflict between Daniel and his faithfulness to his God and guess what? Daniel served and worshipped his God. Daniel 6:10-11.
God forbid that a Lost soul come to our services on Sunday looking for "peace of God that passes understanding" and find us accommodating the "things of this world"!! SUNDAY IS NO TIME TO PLAY... IT IS TIME TO PRAY, WORSHIP AND SERVE OUR GOD!
IF WE HAVE TO INCORPORATE SUPER BOWL IN OUR SERVICES TO GET PEOPLE TO COME TO CHURCH, WE HAVE DONE A PRETTY POOR JOB OF MAKING DISCIPLES OF CHRIST.
LET ME ASK A FEW QUESTIONS:
- WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE BEER COMMERCIALS APPEAR? IN CHURCH!
- WHAT HAPPENS WHEN THE CHEERLEADERS APPEAR? IN CHURCH!
- WOULD JESUS ATTEND? NEVER! NEVER! NEVER!
Mark 11:17 says, "And He taught, saying unto them, Is it not written, My house shall be called of all nations, the house of prayer? but ye have made it a den of thieves."
