In Everything Give Thanks

We see these words in 1Thess. 5:18, “In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

One of the marks of the last days is the unthankful nature of mankind.  2Tim. 3:1-2  “This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come.  For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,…”   Rom.  1:21 “Because that, when they knew God, they glorified him not as God, neither were thankful; but became vain in their imaginations, and their foolish heart was darkened.”

In my 26 years as pastor here at faith, we have helped many people with their needs.  I tell you that I ask tough questions before we help people like, “Who lives with you?”  “Do you drink?”  “Do you smoke?” “Are you Saved?”  “Where do you go to Church?” Many times, they just get angry that I ask those questions and hang up.  We as a Church cannot facilitate their lives of sin and we are accountable to God for how we use His money. In all those dozens and dozens of people we have helped,  I can count on one hand the ones that thanked us by a call, card, or letter.

Ps. 107:1  “O give thanks unto the LORD, for He is good: for His mercy endureth for ever.”
Ps. 118:1 “O give thanks unto the LORD; for He is good: because His mercy endureth for ever.”
Ps. 118:29 “O give thanks unto the LORD; for He is good: for His mercy endureth for ever.”
Ps. 119:62  “At midnight I will rise to give thanks unto Thee because of Thy righteous judgments.”
Ps. 136:1-3  “O give thanks unto the LORD; for He is good: for His mercy endureth for ever.  O give thanks unto the God of gods: for His mercy endureth for ever.  O give thanks to the Lord of lords: for His mercy endureth for ever.”  Vs. 26 “O give thanks unto the God of heaven: for His mercy endureth for ever.”

I heard this quotation some time ago: “If you cannot thank God for what you have, thank Him for what you do not have.”

Ps 139:17-18 “How precious also are thy thoughts unto me, O God! how great is the sum of them! If I should count them, they are more in number than the sand: when I awake, I am still with Thee.”

It is a pitiful lost person that does not recognize the “Goodness of God.”  Ps 31:19  “Oh how great is Thy goodness, which Thou hast laid up for them that fear Thee; which Thou hast wrought for them that trust in Thee before the sons of men!”   Ps 33:5 “He loveth righteousness and judgment: the earth is full of the goodness of the LORD.”

Ps 107:8 “Oh that men would praise the LORD for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men!”
Ps 107:15 “Oh that men would praise the LORD for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men!”
Ps 107:21 “Oh that men would praise the LORD for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men!”
Ps 107:31 “Oh that men would praise the LORD for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men!”

I would like to give a few words of encouragement today about “In everything give thanks…”

First of all, the thanksgiving is to be given to God!   James 1:17 “Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning.”

Secondly, the Bible describes one Gift from God that is unspeakable!  2Co 9:15  “Thanks be unto God for his unspeakable Gift.”  The “Gift” spoken of here is the “Gift” of His Son, Jesus Christ for the sin of the world!  John 4:10 “Jesus answered and said unto her, If thou knewest the Gift of God, and Who it is that saith to thee, Give me to drink; thou wouldest have asked of Him, and He would have given thee living water.”  Rom. 6:23 “For the wages of sin is death; but the Gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”

Thirdly, back in 1 Thess. 5:18, we see, “In everything give thanks : for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”  Recognize that God is in control of the events of our lives.  Nothing can happen to us that is not in some way “for us” in God’s plan.  I know this is hard in some circumstances,  but when we truly believe Romans 8:28 which states,  “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose”, we can look at the problem through the heart of God and know: This has a Godly purpose and we can trust the heart of God when we cannot see the hand of God.”

If you are a lost person, possibly God is going to use your circumstance to draw you to Himself.  If you are a saved person, possibly God is going to use your circumstance for your good or His glory!  Either way, “In everything give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.”

May God bless you hurting ones, and may we all recognize “The Goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.”

Ps 27:13 “I had fainted, unless I had believed to see the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living.”

Psalm 100:4 “:Enter into His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with praise: be thankful unto Him, and bless His name.”
