What Does the Bible Say About
A Good Soldier?

I want to dedicate this article to the memory of those who paid the ultimate price of the freedom of America as well as other nations. Jesus said in John 15:13, "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends." Of course, He was speaking of His own death for the sins of the World. (See Rom. 5:6-10 ) The Bible likens the Christian life to the life of a soldier. Please read 2 Tim. 2:1-14 and see the comparison of a soldier to a Christian.

  1. A good soldier never quits. V.3 "Endure hardness as a good soldier." A good soldier must endure hardness. Conditions are less than comfortable sometimes and a good soldier cannot choose when he will fight. He cannot pick the desired conditions. He cannot tell his commanding officer, "I do not want to fight in this weather. Can?t you see the weather is bad?
  2. A good soldier is disciplined. V.4 "No man that warreth entangleth himself with the affairs of this life." A good soldier doesn?t stop along the march and visit on the sidelines while his comrades go on in war.
  3. A good soldier seeks to please his commanding officer. V.4 "That he may please Him who hath chosen him to be a soldier." This is a Spiritual requirement and it must be a military requirement. Christians should please the LORD just as a soldier pleases his commander.
  4. A good soldier is dedicated to the cause no matter what the cost. 2 Tim. 4:5-7 A good soldier finishes his course, always ready to go; always willing to pay the price; always willing to forsake home, health, wealth, family, luxuries, time and even life itself.
  5. Finally, A good soldier dies in honor. 2 Tim. 4:7, "I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith." Paul was about to die for his faith, for his country (Heaven) and he states that he had stayed the course up to the end, even if it means death. This is true of Christians as well as good soldiers. I know of no one I respect more than a Christian who dies in honor after serving Christ, or a soldier that paid, or is willing to pay the ultimate price of liberty. You who have the scars of service, I salute you. You are my heros. I pray for you and count you a friend that I am indebted to as a free American.
